1980 YZ465 clutch issue

Recommended Posts

Just bought a 1980 YZ465 and it is in great condition - only mechanical issue is the clutch.  Put bike in 1st with clutch in and it begins to pull.  Replaced the fiber plates (figuring they were worn and stuck) but same issue.  Any help and suggestions will be appreciated.... Thanks!

What oil is in the tranny?  Sometimes folks put gear oil in there thinking that is what they need.  But they only need a decent quality 10W-40 oil without friction modifiers.  ATF can be used as well, although I personally don't use it in any of my bikes.

If you have notching in your basket that could cause this symptom. You can either replace the basket or carefully file the notches smooth, that will buy you lots of time and save you a bucket of cash.

Thanks everyone for feedback - will take cover off and inspect basket and go back to regular oil.  Used 75w gear oil last time...

The gear oil is probably the culprit.  It is too thick when cold to allow the clutch to work properly.
