Gunson experience anyone?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I recently purchased a Gunson CO gas ,meter G4125. Does anyone have any experience with such a device? And does anyone know the CO levels for an XR 600 1991 I should be aiming for?

A good dyno shop should have an exhaust gas analyser, but it's not a common tuning tool. I don't know if you can measure it under load, so maybe only idle. A richer idle and off-idle mixture will allow better throttle response, but will show more CO. For reference, the automotive emissions limits in Phx are 4% max at idle for carbureted, non-catalytic vehicles. My non cat RV puts out less than 2% at idle, but does have a little throttle hesitation when cold. Healthy bikes usually meet auto requirements easily, even without cats. So a wild guess by me is a bike will run well with 3-5% co at idle. I have no idea under load, but I would imagine over 5% you will see a lot of soot.

My pig had up to 7.8% co level. Too rich, I think. Just altered the pilot jet down from 62 to 58. Hope to see the results tomorrow.
