Old school fork rebuild with racetech GV

before......

 

wheel off.......now we are cooking 

 

cant forget the parts....

 

outer bushing.....gennie from yammi

 

dust seal and main seal......yammi parts again

 

inner bushings...racetech........cheap on ebay ?

all apart........used homemade tool of all thread with a metric nut welded on the all thread............and a broom handle jammed in the dampning rod ( no pics of either ) 

 

 

i swear the nasty black oil that i drained out of these forks was from 1986 !

as per RT instructions......holes drilled out to 5/16 and more holes added to dampning rod

inside of lower fork leg.....where outer bushing and seals go........for those of you who have never seen

reassembly......inner fork bushing installed on upper fork leg (  not shown ) ......dampning rod with top out spring goes into upper fork leg.....then inserted into lower fork leg and bottom allen bolt tightened

allen bolt that goes in bottom of lower fork leg.......no it does not use 2 copper gaskets

outer bushing installed with plenty of grease

washer over outer bushing installed and driven home with fork seal driver

43mm motion pro fork seal driver.......makes quick work of seal seating

main seal install.......grease it up........and use plastic bag to prevent seal tear while installing......do the same for dust seal install ( not shown )

 

gold valve

install gold valve on top of dampning rod..........add oil......set my oil level 6 inches from top

install spring on top of gold valve........the GV instructions specifies 10mm of spring preload.....used 1 inch sch 40 pipe rather than cut stock metal spacer

put fork caps on ...........and then install forks back in triple clamps

 

all done ! forks are much plusher now and very resistant to bottoming out

? Thanks. I still prefer those type forks. Very easy to get them excellent as compared to modern stuff where it is very easy to screw them up.

Yep.

the original yellow fork boots were very nasty.............got the black ones and was happy......when i did this rebuild i found out that the boots were trapping water on top on the dust seal causing the seal circlip to rust.......gotta find some better boots

and I did use the Thumper Talk Race Tech discount when I ordered the Gold Valves !!!
