air vent problem

What does the carb atmospheric vent do? I can get a better pic when I get outa work

That carb, the Mikuni BSR36 is a constant velocity type, ie the slide is actuated by engine vacuum. In order for that to happen, the other side if the slide diaphragm but be open to normal atmospheric pressure. That hose depicted accomplishes that task.

I don't think it needs to be there btw.

On the TT diagram it's called the (CA) fuel valve, seems like it has something to do with smog restrictions in California.

Oh yeh, and it does look like a proper bit of OEM kit judging by the bracket.

So it's part of the fuel vapour capture system, it links to the canister, which is normally just a tank with activated charcoal in it and it then vents back through the engine once it's running. Most people (on other bikes) just remove that if it gets damaged or even just of it's taking up storage space.. That is unless they live in CA I guess.

First time I've seen one on a DRZ though.
