Steering Column tab broken - is it safe to ride!

Recommended Posts

Hello,

My son has an SSR 125 pit bike and loves it.  He took a crash this past weekend but nothing more than a bruised ego.  On the underside of his steering stem, there is a tab as part of the frame that prevents the steering column from going more than 45 degrees in any direction - see attached photo.  The tab broke and i was wondering if he can still safely ride it until I bring it to a machine shop so they can weld a piece in place?

The only danger is in a crash the forks will smash into whatever the stop was preventing them from hitting.  Could be the tank, radiator or electronics. Or maybe a body part.  While not ideal I would say it is pretty far down the list of dangerous things.

mikedabike,

Thanks for your advice.  Appreciate it!  I have a weekend with my son dirt biking and will have fixed afterwards.  Thanks again.
