Steering damper for beginner?

Recommended Posts

My buddy starting riding this season on a CRF250x. Aside from basic mods he had the suspension re-sprung, my advise. He is now fixated on a Scott's steering damper. As a beginner he has taken a few spills and had a bit of oh cr*p moments. He believes the damper will help him stay upright. He is realistic that he just needs ride time but when he had his suspension done he said he didn't notice much. Well I rode the bike, we both are about 200lb and I thought it felt much better. So I am not sure if the damper will help if he doesn't know how to properly set the tune? Thanks.

The only downside to a damper is the cost.

Set it to the lowest setting and increase from there as needed. I have run several Scotts' dampers and loved them. My bikes are set up well enough now and my skill is adequate not to really need them. But they are good addition for beginners and those who ride high speed such as desert.
