Air cooled oil in water cooled bike?

Recommended Posts

So, long story short, my dad bought Lucas synthetic oil. On the back of the Carton it says for air cooled engines. Will this hurt my bike, or should I get the stuff for water cooled engines? My bike is a yz125.

I run Lucas synthetic 2-stroke oil in my yz250 (blue colored stuff you can buy at Fred Meyer). No problems whatsoever and it's waaaayyyyy cheaper than that bel-ray stuff that I was using for a while.

My buddy runs the same oil in his yz125 race bike with no issues, either. Just more money for gas to get to riding places.

Does it have a rating? ISO-ED, TC-W3, API-TC, etc?

Just saying its for air cooled engines doesn't really tell one anything.

Lucas semi-syn (blue) oil has the JASO FC & FD certification, and claims to exceed API TC ratings. An air cooled motor will be more demanding of an oil than a more temperature controlled water cooled motor will. In a nut shell, if it will work in an air cooled motor, it will more than work in a water cooled motor. So, it will work just fine in your YZ125.

+1 on what hillbilly said.

Your jetting will potentially cause more damage than using oil for air cooled engines ever will.
