What octane fuel to run?

Recommended Posts

Has 12:1 compression ratio what's the lowest/safest you would ever run in it. Also it's a 4T and what does detonation sound like in a 4stroke?

To answer your question about octane: it depends on a number of other factors, not just compression ratio. Bore size, combustion chamber design, etc.

Detonation or "knocking" is often barely perceptible by sound... But will usually sound like a mechanical/metallic rasping sound (hard to describe)

Detonation sounds similar from every engine I've ever heard it in, it only varies in severity.  In a high RPM engine, two or four stroke, it sounds very much like sandy roost spray hitting your helmet.  Detonation can occur to such a mild degree that it is inaudible but such mild det isn't likely to cause engine damage.

I always run the highest grade pump gas available.  If you get detonation on that you can either retard the timing or lower the compression.
