Changing oil

Recommended Posts

I have the kickstart version of the drz400 and it's my first bike that has had an oil filter. I'm unsure of how often to change the oil. I only trail ride, I ride pretty hard but not bangin it off the rev limiter all the time. Last time it was changed was September 13'. That's when I bought it, the guy was a good friend of mine and changed the oil for me. He didn't have the bike very long. Since then I've rode about 400 miles. I checked it a week ago and it still looks hazel brown. Should I go ahead and change it?

Oil color means nothing.  Dirt bike oil should be changed frequently with good quality oil.  The air filter never catches all the dust and what it misses winds up in the oil.  Oil changes 300 to 500 miles.  Filter every second change.  Do it at least once a year and if the oil is changed only one a year do the filter also with the oil change.

If you ride it hard off road then I would change it more frequently! With my old Try 450 er (quad to dirt bike comparison I know) I changed it every 3-4 big rides (full day or weekend at atv park) or but that spanned about every other month. Just because I rode it hard in the woods and I knew it would get hot! So for me if i only rode it hard in the woods and got it hot I would change it every 4th ride might be excessive but you can really beat on an engine if you are riding slower echnical terrain.

The owners manual for my '03 drz 400s says every 600 miles. Gonna have to change it every month when I start commuting to school...

With commuting and spirited street riding, I change mine ~1,000 miles. Earlier if the shifting gets really notchy.

Are you sure you didn't read the initial oil change interval? My manual says to change the oil at 600 miles initially then every 4,000 miles thereafter. Which is way too long IMO.

Might have, I thought it seemed a little excessive.

Off road riding is alot harder than street riding on a bike so I would recommend to change it sooner than the 1k usual! I'd rather be a little excessive than loose on my intervals when you are beating on a bike hard in the woods!
