1991 XR250L non-working speedometer question

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Longtime lurker. Thanks for all the help, to all who contribute such useful stuff.

Got a '91 XR250L that is helping me through a godawful divorce.

Speedometer and odometer don't work.

  1. Which component fails most often in these? Gauge, cable, or little mechanism in the front hub?

  2. What's the best way to diagnose it? Remove headlight and bracket so I can unscrew the cable from the gauge, then spin the front wheel and see whether the cable rotates?

Thanks, everyone. This bike and the Thumpertalk community have really rallied my spirits.

The cable is tricky to install into the hub drive.  Remove the phillips screw and turn the wheel back and forth while pushing the cable housing into the drive.  If it clicks in further, that may be the problem.  It's not a bad idea to remove the drive to clean and re-grease it.

Usually the speedo drive getting gunked up and not turning the cable.

As noted above, it's tricky to get the cable into the drive correctly, lots of guys with un working speedo's simply because the cable isn't in all the way and thus won't turn.
