Split cases?

I was riding my new to me yz250 and the shifter went the whole way down while I was shifting so the shifter is stripped and so is the shaft it goes in do I have to spilt the cases to put a new shaft in?

ya I don't think there's a trick around that one. not sure if you spilt both halves or just one.

Nope, take the right side cover Off and then the whole clutch pack including basket. Bottom left should be your shift linkage (I haven't done it on a YZ but it's easy enough to figure out) take it apart and slide your shift shaft out from there

Wait you side right side case but the shaft is on the left?

 

 

the shaft goes all the way through the cases to just under the right side cover

Oooh okay that makes more sense now so the only thing I have to take off is the side coverImageUploadedByThumper Talk1407771720.348939.jpg ad should I take the motor out or do I not have to? I'm only 15 haha

You don't have to,

Take off pipe

Kickstarter

Rear brake lever

Disconnect and drain radiator line

Disconnect power valve from cylinder

Drain the oil

Take the cover on the right side off, not the clutch cover, the one around it.

Report back when done and I can give you a hand with the rest

Okay thanks and I do have a torque wrench I'm ordering the shaft today and it should be here soon what gasket would I need if I'm taking the cover off what's that called

youll need the torque wrench and that gasket should be in the parts fiche
