Top vs Bottom end repair, how to tell

Recommended Posts

I was wondering, when looking at a used bike.  And the guy says "it doesn't run well because he let the gas sit in it for a year"   How can you tell the difference between the bike needing a good carb  cleaning, a new top end, or a new bottom end?   I don't think the person would let you take apart his bike.  Are there certain noises from the engine that I should listen for?  If so what do they sound like?  Are there any tricks of the buying trade?  Im talking about yamaha 4T only?

I would go take it for a test drive and see exactly what he is talking about and then give us a better description of what the bike is doing.

You can't really tell unless you take it apart.

That's why you buy good running bikes with no problems and if they say they rebuilt it, ask to see the receipts.
