DR. Mark, IM nail broken tibia question

Recommended Posts

I'm 8 months out from broken tib/fib. I have no intention to remove the nail but was wondering if there are any advantages to having it in there. Does the rod make the tibia any stronger after healing or is it just along for the ride ? Thanks.

If it doesn't bother you, there is little reason to bother it.

A guy was writing that  the rod in the tibia would make the bone stronger and help avoid future fractures in that tibia. Can't find much out there to support this theory.

What's the potential for bending the rod if left in and having another accident to the leg? Would it be more beneficial to have the rod removed after the bone is healed?

I used to be worried about that until I had such a case. Removing a broken rod isn't so hard at all. I think the motivation to have the rod removed as a matter of course is based on urban legend.
