XR80 and XR100R Known Issues?

Recommended Posts

HEllo All,

so I have these 2 bikes the XR 80 and the XR 100

2002 and 2003 respectively

Last year the 80 threw off the tappet locknut and it found its way into the timing chain.

There is a thread I did on its replacement and all is well... My little guys usually start it on the first or second kick.\

Now ths year the 100 ndecided to have the valve cotter fail...we call em retainers...

and the intake valve gets sucked down and hit the top of the pistoin... I have it apart and doesnt seem to be much damage...

will check the ring lands tonight

Each of these machines has less than 30 hours on them..

Is there some list of know issues that I can get so as to check the bikes over?

The cotter failing looks like  hardening issue... and the locknut may have been just dumb luck

Thanks for reading

Very interesting.  My wife had a 1987 XR100 that stayed in the family for 22 years and all that was ever done was routine maintenance.  My buddy has a 2000 and a 2002 and the same story there.  These engines are generally extremely reliable, even when not perfectly maintained.

Yea, me and my friends have been building and racing these things since the eighty's, and I've never had that happen.  The tappet is probably from not tightening it from whoever did the valves last.
