Riding style for mud holes?

Recommended Posts

go around them.

seriously, unless you know how deep a mud hole is for sure, go around it. even if you know how deep it is...go around it if you can.

if you cannot go around mud holes, once you are sure it is not going to swallow your bike...hit it with some speed, standing, weight back, on the throttle to keep the front end light. if it's short enough, wheelie through it (keeps you and the bike much cleaner). in longer mud patches, the front is going to slide around. just keep it light--weight back and stay on the throttle--and that won't matter.

a good drill to practice is the front brake slide drill in grass. that is the drill where you ride in a straight line across grass with your front brake intentionally locked up (get going a bit then lock it up on purpose--while standing, with your weight back...you will have to add some throttle to maintain forward momentum). it's a great drill in general and it mimics what the front end will often do in mud...so you get used to handling it and using the throttle and body positioning to ride through it.

water is pretty much the same deal. usually, around here at least, the bottom is rocky, though...so you add that element. fortunately, standing up and keeping your weight back and staying on the throttle enough to keep the front light and maintain forward momentum works great for riding rocks, too. so, you just do that...or, at least, i do.

First off, leave all your protective gear at home. It is hard to clean when it gets muddy. Second, get your weight forward as much as possible and hit the mud with as much speed as you can. Results posted in link.

completely ignore what this guy just said. 1.If you're too lazy to clean your gear then you don't need a bike at all. 2. Lean back really far. You want rear wheel traction not front. 3. If you hit a mud put head on with your weight forward you may flip. This guy is ignorant and even if he's joking you shouldn't joke about safety unless you say you're joking at the end.

I'd test how deep it is first. I almost made the mistake of drowning my bike when I was checking how deep one was while still riding it. I locked up the brakes as soon as I realized I wouldn't make it through when my front tire was completely submerged and up to the front fender.

Try to keep a good pace and constant speed. Lean back a bit.

Don't try to crack the throttle wide open in the middle, it's a good way to loop out if it's really muddy.

i can't currently for some reason they aren't working. But I've seen stories where people ask for help and then people say that stuff and they go and do it and hurt themselves.
