Drz400sm vs xr650r. Not ur average question

Recommended Posts

Hello all. New guy here becoming a regular. My question is not ur average drz400sm vs xr650r thread, I know the xr is miles ahead. What I'm wondering is the street ability of the xr. I would like to eventually give the xr the supermoto treatment but I'd like it to handle well too, at least on the level of the drz400sm. Would this be fairly easy with USD fork swaps or something? I've watched some vids people have posted about altering suspension going horribly wrong and becoming unsafe. So in conclusion my primary concern is good handling as I love canyon carving, should I take the safe route (drz) or would I have no problem altering suspension on the Xr? Have people had good luck with altering Xr suspension before?

Yes, post your question here

http://www.thumpertalk.com/forum/14-xr600650/

But you should expect to put a lot of money into a project with the XRR to tard it and there are too many mods available   :)

With DRZ you will want power mods: FCR39 carb, Full exhaust, camshafts from E model, CDI from E model, higher compression gasket, big bore kit, then it becomes fun to ride

BTW how much experience do you have? If you only ridden 250cc bikes before then XR650R will seem like an.. arm reaping monster, although it's quite smooth in fact

Thanks the great responses. I just finished reading some peoples xr motard projects, wish I'd found those earlier, and yeah it seems like a lot more than I can do. And my experience is mostly with 250's but I've ridden a wr450 and it's power seemed pretty manageable. But since I'm looking to do around 80/20 street/dirt the drz is seeming like a better option. I just love power! XD

then the DRZ may not be for you...unless you do a big bore, FCR, exhaust, etc.

but, by the time you get done putting all that money into it, you could have just bought something like a KTM EXC 5xx and put motard wheels on it.
