2001 YZ125 top end

Recommended Posts

So I bought a 2001 Yamaha YZ125 last week, the bike is in near perfect condition and I paid $1200, which may have been a little much but I wanted the bike so I let it get the best of me. Anyway, the bike has an Athena cylinder kit (Cylinder, head, piston) and it had 10,1 hours on an hour meter when I got it. It now has 13.3. I've heard that Athena Cast pistons are not good quality and that they are likely to crack or harm the cylinder. Would I be able to put a forged piston in this cylinder or would I have to stick to athena pistons? Sorry if these are dumb questions but I'm pretty new to the internals of 2 stroke engines. Thannks!

Do you need to run race gas with that compression ratio?

If the bore is stock, just switch over to a wiseco after you put some more hours on the bike.
