Dual Sport XR650R Opinions Wanted!

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I just recently got my hands on a new to me XR650R with roughly 1500 mile on it and in excellent condition. I plan to street legalize the bike. Currently it it is mostly stock (I.E. no blinkers etc) and I would like to get a kit to dual sport it. After a lot of research and forum reading I have narrowed it down to two choices; Baja Designs or Vancouver Supermoto. Here are the links to each:

Vancouver SuperMoto; http://www.vancouversupermoto.com/product_info.php?cPath=86_67_74&products_id=157

BajaDesigns: http://www.bajadesigns.com/ProductDetail?ItemNumber=121300RD

The way I see it the VSM kit is a high quality design. A little more expensive. I am not a fan of the Traitech X2 design either. But I do like how the wire harness is designed. Also, the install appears to keep the battery and most of the wiring hidden under the seat somewhere. The BajaDesigns kit has in my opinion a better headlight but more of a wiring mess behind the headlight shroud. It is however a cheaper kit.

How is the light output of the BajaDesigns kit? I do plan on adding Highway Dirt Bike ultimate handguards and top clamp to the bike as well. This would work nicely with a Trailtech Vapor (incuded in the VSM kit). I could always add it later with the BajaDesigns as well though.

Regardless, I am just looking for some input as I can't seem to make up my mind! Thanks!

For any decent headlight output you will need too get a high output stator. With the stock stator I could only run a 30 watt headlight. I rewound my own using advice from the thread below.

Thanks, the bike does have rewound stator in it already, 200w from the previous owner

I got the Tusk kit for about $200 and then I added a Reg/Rec and a headlight. Costed me way less then both the two options you mentioned.

Great price! Anything you didn't like about it?

Probably the mirrors. I put an Emgo mirror and thinking of getting one more for the right side. Other than that, the kit is a great one.

Bear in mind, that the RR is not included in this kit (at least the one I got).
