Help me get my 1986 xr200 fixed for my girlfriend

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone I have a 1986 xr200 and a 1997 xr250

The 200 has blown forks with damaged shafts ( forks are likely complete garbage after running so long with little to no oil)

The leaky oil caused front break to lock then eventually wear out .

My girlfriend 5'4 is moving to the 200 from her Chinese 125 4t ( it weighs 160 lbs wet!) she only rides it on easy 2 track because the lack of front brake makes technical single track sketchy.

What would you guys do? We ride slow and mostly mountain single track.

Don't want to swap forks to something with a harsh ride.

Don't want to fix brake and have shock oil ruin it again.

Don't wanta drop a bunch of money into it

If the forks are not nicked or gouged bushing/seal kits are available from Honda for the forks.  Monor nicks can be polished out with a Dremel and polishing disk.  If you need parts most of the fork parts interchange from 84-02

ATF will work for fork fluid.

A can of brake clean will remove the oil from the front brake drum and shoes.

Forks are nicked from this crash by the previous owner.

He had the seals done and they only lasted one trip :(

XR200 Stanchions:

93-02 Stanchion  (pipe)  51410-KT0-691

84-91 Stanchion  (pipe)  51410-KK0-004

The 97 XR250R front end will bolt on, and will provide a front disc brake and more rigid cartridge forks with better damping than the XR200s.
