Street Legal 250f

Recommended Posts

Well I just have not used my 2013 kx250f much. I am thinking about doing a poor mans street legal conversion so I can get more use from it.

I found out the stock 13' 250f stator puts out 40w stock which is pretty good really. Wouldn't that be enough to keep a couple small battery packs charged that's used to run cree led lights?

I have already found most of what I will need. I just want to figure out how the charging will work out. I'm guessing I will need a regulator. I will try to keep the lighting wattage to a minimum so the stator can just keep the battery even with it running.. It don't seem like it will be that complicated really.

Here's my requirements in Ky.

Vehicle and Equipment Requirements
  • Rearview mirror
  • One headlight (high and low beam)
  • Taillight
  • Horn
  • Muffler
  • Tailpipe
  • Brake light
  • Front and rear brakes
  • Tires with legal tread depth
  • Turn signals (now required if they were part of the factory equipment for that model)

List so far.

-----Horn----http://www.ebay.com/itm/360778962116

-----Tail light with plate holder.---http://www.ebay.com/itm/331289614093

-----Uni brake light switch.---http://www.ebay.com/itm/301153970015

-----Turns-----http://www.ebay.com/itm/191277726169--------It actually states they are only required to have them if that model came with them. So that excludes a 250f. But I will put them on there for good measure.

-----Bar switch for lights and horn.-----http://www.ebay.com/itm/161336872180

Up in the air on exact model led head lighting and what kind of battery setup. If I got full 12v I was looking at the LFX line of lithium batteries. If I wanted lower voltage I was thinking a couple LI-On battery packs that come with the cree bicycle lights. Those things are insane bright.

Any suggestions?

Before you do all that work make sure you can even register the bike for on road. I looked into this a few months ago. In NY there is no way to register a bike that has a "for off road use only" certificate. I would have had to find a frame from out of state that had a street registration then swap my motor into that. Just not worth the effort in my opinion.

Agreed. Over here in Cali the communist state I cant get my 03 street legal because it does not have an EPA logo on the carb. Check with your licensing board before dumping all that $ into it.

Yeah Cali is a terrible state for EPA issues. Not that way here. Plus the 13' in Fuel Injected so I don't know how that would be. I'll be checking when I get a little more time.

If you use all led lighting 40watts will be enough, you can use a small battery or capacitor to aid it.

Many states will allow you to street title it, talk to some local dualsport guys who are in the know for details.

Yeah that's what I wanted to do was use a small battery. The 40watts would keep it charged enough and I think it would work out. I may do it over the winter.
