83 XT550 Kickstarter problem

Recommended Posts

Hey Thumpers, I have an 83 XT550 in decent shape.

I replaced the kick start lever once when the original lever cracked, had been starting, albeit difficult, ever since.

Today I went to kick it & got the 2 easy strokes Then KLAK! It sounded a bit dry, as if metal struck metal ?

I had the decompress lever activated while kicking it, But now it seems completely seized and I cannot budge the kick starter at all. :foul:

Anyone relate with similar problems?  Thanks in advance!

I used to own one of these bikes back in the early 90's.  I never experienced the problem you're having.  I remember it was a bastage to kick on the compression stroke.  So much so, that it once back-kicked my knee cap into the front brake perch.  OUCH!

sounds like kick starter shaft might have broken inside the case.  seen it happen quite a few times on brothers xt200 as they did not have a decompressor unless you put a head from a trimoto 200 on it that is.
