Fork Seals Again...advice please

Hey All,

Ok, first of all, thanks to all for the cleaning tricks...I used a combo of the 35mm film and followed up with a business card wipe...I never liked that salesman anyway :)

Now my question: I've heard that a good coating of waterproof grease under the dust seal is a good idea. I'm not sure about doing this. Please let me know if you have had any experience with this technique.

Thanks as all rock!

oh, and...Ride On........................

I use light lithium base grease under the dust covers, so far no trouble at all. It's very light weight grease, almost like butter. Just clean out under the dust seals then spread it around under there. Put enough that when you replace the dust seals, the dirt caught in the seals will squirt out with the extra grease. Then you can wipe it off with a rag. You'll have to work the forks up and down a bit and the extra will come out, but after 3 or 4 rounds of "compress the forks and wipe" then it will be nice and clean. I don't often ride in mud or water, but in the 8 months or so I've had my bike I've never had to clean the oil seals with anything.

Someone else here gave me this idea, I don't remember the name though..

yep..after you get your seals all clean, fill the dust wiper with grease( i use bel-ray water proof)...its messy but works if you rise in mus and sand

Alrighty then,

thanks for the info...I use Maxim (sp?) grease. I guess it should be's lithium based as well. Messy stuff though...

take care and Ride On...

Just got back from Carnegie and not a single drop of fork oil came out all day!

This site rocks and just saved me about $100 :)

Thanks everyone, motoman especially.

I used the film and business card trick and it did the trick...lots less than new seals...

I am I love this stuff!!

white lithium grease under the dust seals. I've done it on my '00 all along and I'm still on the stock seals. I used to have a link that had pictures and all but it's a dead link now, I just checked.

I think it was your site where I saw how to do it, thanks for the idea! :)
