Goggle lenses

Im getting some new goggles and have a question about the lenses. You can generally get clear or tinted/mirrored lenses. Do the tinted/mirrored lenses add a or enhance anything or are they just for looks. Im guessing the tinted ones will reduce sun glare and things like that, but do the mirrored lenses add anything?? Or are they just for style, to look cool.

Depends on where you ride. I ride woods and trails. My experience is tinted lenses reduce my visibility when under the trees. So even though I wish they were tinted when in open areas I choose being able to see better in the shadows.

If I rode MX where there was no trees I would choose tinted.

Mirrored lens seem to be some of the best "do it all" lens if you're someone who wants to leave a set in and never change it. I have always have one clear and one smoke lens and change them depending on the conditions. Takes about 20 seconds to change them on my goggles.

I don't use mirrored lenses, but I do use a smoke lens. I like the smoke, even riding in semi dark conditions.....Though, I have ridden, in the woods, at or barely after dusk and that I didn't like so much.

Under my christmas tree is a pair of goggles that has a blue "mirrored" lens....haven't checked them out, but I would say it's a style thing. I got them cheap and planned to use them as my back up goggles, so i didn't care about the lens color at all.

I know the feeling, I ended up getting a sweet deal on some Oakley airbrakes and the ability to swap lens so easy is a big plus to me. My last goggles were Oakley crowbars.

Mirrored lenses work a bit better at reducing the glare of direct sunlight.  Beyond that they are pretty much for looks.  They also scratch much easier so run a tearoff.

I believe the logic behind all the different colored lenses is that they enhance certain colors in certain light conditions. At least that has been my experience with the few different tints I have tried.

I prefer the clear lenses, and I have a visor on my helmet to keep my eyes shaded (unless I just broke it off.. doh!!  )

I have pro grip goggles. They automatically tint in the sun and go back to clear in the shade.

I typically prefer the orange high definition lenses for woods riding, if it's bright out the light blue works well. I have only used smoke in the dunes, just too much shade in the woods here.

how fast do they transition, my experience with transition lenses in glasses is that they would not change fast enough for riding.

They transition in seconds. Riding from sun to shade, you can hardly tell. I've used these goggles for years, riding hare scrambles in Virginia and North Carolina. Never had a problem. Best goggles ever.
