fork spring install length

Recommended Posts

ok so i now have my fork springs and i am trying to get the sort out the length

one of the springs is 480mm the other is 482mm

i have 3x 3.5mm spacers from the old springs

from what i was able to find the spring length with spacers is 488-492mm is this correct for wp cc fork. what differance will having more or less have?

the spacers available on the fiche finder are 1.5mm, 2.5mm and 5mm

what spacers should i get?

i was thinking i could set it to 490mm

 480mm: 2x5mm

482mm: 1x5mm, 1x3.5, 1x1.5mm

does this sound ok?

cheers

wait i have confused myself now i have realised i have not added it up correctly

so for the 480mm spring i add 2x5mm spacers to make the length 490mm

so for the 482mm spring what do i need to add if i add 2x5mm to make the length 492mm will this give the springs the same preload or do they need to be the same length i.e do they both need to be 490mm long. but wont this mean that the 482mm spring will have less preload on it?

what does having more preload accomplish? and how much will i be putting on with these numbers?

could somone explain the concept of preload to me?

488 = theoretical 0 ...there is no exact 0 because there is a top out spring.

Soooo the spring with spacers together at 490 for example yields 2 mm preload.

492 would = 4 mm.

They should obviously should be the same.....but if one is preloaded slightly more than the other it won't be the end of the world.

Spacers come in different thickness to compensate for varying length of springs.

General rule of thumb ...weak spring with a lot of preload will feel worse than correct spring with light preload.
