50-51-52 sprockets / chain links

Recommended Posts

2010 YZ125, factory gears are 13/48 but I run a 13/49 at local motocross tracks,

the original chain lenght is 112 links and fits on both the above gear combos.

Next summer I'd like to experiment with final drive ratios,

either 50-51 or even a 52 tooth rear sprocket for occasional woods / trail use.

(I could swap for a 12T front sprocket to get the same ratios but prefer not changing that)

To those who have used 50-51-52 rear sprockets, my questions are:

Up to what size rear sprocket does the stock length 112 link chain fit on?

And, does the rear tip of the plastic/urethane chain guide wear like crazy since the angle of chain / diameter of sprocket increases?

I have a spare set of wheels/tires that I'll only be using for occasional

trail / woods use. The bigger sprocket will be installed on the spare wheel.

Also, by experience a small diameter 12T sprocket is tougher on the chain.

You have a point there, I forgot what size chain we were talking about.  I would shy away from going to a smaller counter shaft too.  I wonder if there would be that interference with the chain guide block thingie?   That is tech speak from and old fart.
