Timing question

It wasnt until re-reading the timing thread that i saw it was for a newer yz...so...

My clymer manual says set timing at 1.5mm btdc (0.059in) and i'm currently at 1.2mm. My question is how far retarded is that?

Maybe ive read too much today and im confused and missing something easy

Done it before on a V8 stock-car engine but the principal would still apply here I'm sure:

 

with dial indicator set on top of the piston at exact top dead center and a degree wheel installed on the flywheel,

you would be able to find out both how much piston travel equals one degree of crank rotation or,

where should the timing mark align when the piston is at 1.5mm BTDC
