Can the cam chain come off the crankshaft gear

Recommended Posts

Yes, very possible for it to 'bunch up' down at the crank. Usually, if you pull on the chain gently (both sides) and try to rotate the flywheel with your hand, it'll free up. Otherwise, you may have to pop the flywqheel off.

Lesson is to alwys keep a little tension applied to the cam chain when the cams are out.

William1, my guess that is what happened, I will get a fly wheel puller today and slip the flywheel off, I sure all will be revealed then.

I thought the chain could not come off the crankshaft gear so I was not that carfull when I refitted the cylinder head.

Well I ended up taking the engine cover off and had a close look at the chain and gear, it all looked ok. So I went back and pulled the chain up and tight then assembled the cams into place as normal.

I don't really know what was wrong, the first time I tried to put the cams in i had the feeling the cam chain was slipping around the gear, I must have been wrong.
