DR-Z400E, DR-Z400S can you tell difference in pictures?

Recommended Posts

Is it possible to tell the difference between a DR-Z400E and a DR-Z400S just by looking at pictures? What are the distinguishing factors? I've seen some bikes listed as DR-Z400S with aftermarket lights and other parts that look like they could be an E.

Here's an example.

This is listed as a S model, but I don't see any rear lights and it only has one mirror. What else should I be looking for?

E model has a plastic tank, S has metal. E model has the FCR carb which is pretty easy to see right away, the S has the smaller Mikuni. The E doesn't have a speedo, just an hour meter......

i usually look for the subframe. i haven't seen an E with and S/SM subframe on it yet. if it's an S/SM with the frame hacked off it will usually have other dumb 'mods' that tell about it's maintenance or lack thereof, and make me look elsewhere for a reliable bike.

Definitely an S, the front turn signals are still on it, passenger pegs, speedo cable, metal tank, mirror, and license plate, that I can see. I wonder if the owner was doing a wheelie and it went over backwards possibly tearing off the back lights. Or maybe he just wasn't very good at the mod thing.

Except in SA and Oz, there was an E model, but with an S sub frame and speedo. It still had all the good stuff, plastic tank, cam, exhaust, compression ratio, carb...
