Kawasaki Engine and Frame Numbers Explained

Recommended Posts

Seems pretty much on a weekly basis someone asks what year their bike or engine is.  The information is ALL here if you search, but I decided to put it all in one post.

FRAME NUMBER or VIN - Vehicle Identification Number
(Euro models will have a number similar to the engine number, NOT a 17 digit US VIN)

The VIN or FRAME NUMBER is located behind the front numberplate on the steer tube of the frame.  It will be a 17 digit number if it was manufactured after 1980.  Pre 1980 it will be a serial number around 8-10 characters depending on the year/model, etc.  I'll focus on the post 1980 VIN.

To determine the YEAR OF YOUR FRAME you take the 10th character of the VIN and compare it to the chart below.  In this case the 10th CHARACTER is the letter N.

A=1980 B=1981 C=1982 D=1983 E=1984 F=1985 G=1986 H=1987 J=1988

K=1989 L=1990 M=1991 N=1992 P=1993 R=1994 S=1995 T=1996

V=1997 W=1998 X=1999 Y=2000 1=2001 2=2002 3=2003 4=2004

5=2005 6=2006 7=2007 8=2008 9=2009

That is a 1992 FRAME.

You can also get other information fron your VIN by typing it into a free VIN lookup tool online or on the Kawasaki website on the Owners > Parts Lookup page.

ENGINE NUMBER

This is usually located on the right side of the engine CASE on top of the clutch cover.  I don't have every single model of Kawasaki so you may need to look around for it.

Here is the ENGINE NUMBER for my 1994 KX250:

KX250KE000400

IMG_6943.jpg

The breakdown is as follows:

KX250 - Model and CC of engine
K - model series*
E - Engine (I assume)
000400 - This was the 400th engine built of this MODEL SERIES*

MODEL SERIES

Kawasaki uses a letter to define their MODEL SERIES.  For instance, the K Model 125/250's were 1994 - 1998.  The L Model 125/250's are 1999 - 2002, and so on.  For my 1994 KX250 the complete model name is: KX250 - K1.  The K referring to the model series and the 1 referring to 1994, the first year of the model series.  If it was a 1997 KX250 it would be a KX250 - K4.

DETERMINING THE YEAR OF YOUR ENGINE or CASES

Using my 1994 KX250 ENGINE NUMBER, all you need to do is look on the BACK COVER TO YOUR FACTORY SERVICE MANUAL.  The table shows what numbers fall into what years.

Here's the back cover to a K model 1994 - 1998 Kawasaki Factory Service ManualKX125%20KX250%2094-98%20Service%20Manual

In 1994 the engine number starts with 000001.
In 1995 the engine number starts with 006001.

Since my ENGINE NUMBER is 000400, this makes my CASE a 1994.
If the engine number was KX250KE023567 that would make it a 1997.
If the engine number was KX250LE005347, that would make it an L MODEL and this is not the right manual.

You can also look up the VIN number on the back cover too.

CYLINDERS

Kawasaki made porting or cylinder design changes pretty much on an annual basis.  There is (usually) a 4 digit number cast into the cylinder which represents the cylinder PART NUMBER.  Kawasaki part number consist of  TWO SEPERATE SETS OF NUMBERS.  The first set is the REFERENCE NUMBER. This basically tells you what the part is, gasket, decal, fender, footrest, etc.  The second set of numbers is the PART NUMBER.  This is what defines the year, make, model, color, etc of that part.  So a cylinder for a 1994 KX250 is part number 11005-1722.  If that "1722" was not on the cylinder, it would look like every other 250 cylinder from 1993 to 2004.  Since they basically changed cylinders every year, you can sometimes use this to determine the year.  If not, you at least know what year cylinder you have in case you need to buy parts.

2004 KX125 cylinder number 0013.  Actual part number is 11005-0013

If, for some reason, you still cannot determine the year/model of your bike, you can hunt for parts with 4 digit numbers cast into them then look up the REFERENCE NUMBER, add the 4 digit number you found and Google the 9 digit number for the year/models the part was used.

Hi, i know that i am posting on  an old thread, but i recently acquired a KX250 and was told by the previous owner that it was a 1996 model and i am trying to identify the model year that i have. Going from on the information in this thread which is the best information that i have found on the KX250.  The frame number on mine is KX250K 002-808 and the number on the cyclinder head is 1722 as per the photos. I would just like to ask regarding the frame number on mine would that frame number make it definitively  a 1994 model. What does the 002-808 in my frame number mean or does it have any or what is the significance of the numbers. My apologies if it sounds like a stupid question but i need to order parts and i would like to understand the frame numbers. Thanks in advance of any possible answers.

John.

For the year of the bike you have to look at the tenth digit of the VIN # on the steering tube like it says . It will be one letter or number , that is your year for the frame .

He's in Ireland so no US 17 digit VIN.

There are other ways to determine your year without the frame number:

-What is the engine number located on top of the clutch cover near the oil fill cap?

-How is the rear brake pedal attached to the frame, is there a pin welded to the frame or a removable allen head pin?

-What is the fork tube diameter, 43 or 46mm?

Hi lads, thanks for the replies. The engine number on mine reads KX250KE 002-816 and hopefully i have some pictures attached for viewing. The brake pedal has an allen bolt securing it to the frame. The number on the air filter to carb connector is 1582 and i could not find any number on the chain slider. Maybe there is enough info there to identify it.

Remove the brake pedal, looks like a welded stud without the bolt. Everything else says 94 or possibly 95. Can you take a pic of the engine number? Why is there a - in it?

Hi and thanks for the help in dating the bike. The engine number i posted i put a hyphen where i shouldn't have so the engine number is KX250KE-002816 and the frame number is KX250K-002808. It appears that it is a 1994 bike from all the signs on it so i will go with that.

Hey,

I work in a school teaching kids how to fix bikes- we have been donated a bike but its a mash up of various parts from lots of bikes so the frame isn't necessarily the same year as the engine. We need to identify the exact engine so that we can replace the cylinder...but the engine number doesn't come up in any of the searches I have done.

The engine number is KX250NE014666

I have found this number stamped near the cylinder head 0.2490

And the frame the engine is in has JKAXMNG45A013912 on it but that doesn't come up on the Kawasaki website either!

Any help would be appreciated in identifying the exact engine so we can start ordering parts.

Thanks

Ryan

Well, that confirms its a four stroke.  Googling the prefix of your engine number "KX250NE" came up with 2004 KX250F.  So start your search there.  Not sure how familliar you are with those 04/05 KX250F (four strokes) but they are basically shit.  They are known as one of the worst bikes ever produced.

This is the 2 stroke forum, by the way.  But good luck with your project.

Thank you,  I was aware it was a 2 stroke forum but I've had little luck finding any details so appreciate the help all the same.

It doesn't really matter if its not classed as a good engine- its for a school to strip down, repair and put back together to learn about how engines work so hopefully it will do that job.

Thanks again.
