Knocking 98

My 98 Wr400 has a knocking sound, it sounds like its coming from the right side(clutch). Does anybody have any ideas of what I should check? It can be heard while kicking it or when its running. Thanks for your help. ?

I'm not sure but I think the 98's had a problem with the key that holds the counterbalance on. As I recall the key would wear badly and allow a lot of backlash in the balancer. I'm sure there are others here that know more about it than I do. Just a thought.
