How to clean a top end cylinder exhaust port from carbon deposits?

Hey guys im in the process of rebuilding the topend on my YZ125 2001.... Im just curious how I should clean the exhaust port located on the topend cylinder, it has some carbon deposits within the exhaust port. Just wondering if i should clean this with water or mineral spirits paint thinner? any help would be appreciated.

Copper brush and contact cleaner. Don't use water at all.

I used to use diesel and a little steel wool.  Soften the carbon, take your time and it will just wipe right off with little effort, well maybe.  Anyway , it sounded good.
