Need serious help with bike setup

alright guys, I have an 06 Crf250x. I love the bike, I do, my problem is that it just doesnt perform well at race pace, or that long of endurance. I am about 220lb, and the suspension is just killing my arms. A little history-

Forks havent been bled, ever.

Suspension is completely stock.

valves have never been redone.

Everything except the rekluse clutch is stock on the thing.

 

Please for the love of all that is braap, tell me what I need to do to get me through my hare scrambles and enduro racing.

i would start by using the bleeders on the top of the forks ! i would then set all the clickers on the forks bottom and top to there weakest setting i.e turni the clickers gently to the left ..

Then i would turn the clickers to halfway (tighten approx ten clicks) and go from there ,if your having your having trouble you can always go to a specialist and get the suspension dialed in properly ! On the rear you should have adjusted your sag and have the correct spring for your weight and if you shock has not been serviced in a while it would probably be wise to get that done first as everything you do could be for nothing otherwise .. tyre pressures are another thing that changes handling characteuristics ,tyre choice. the list is endless ..Not knowing how well you know your bike is a factor too !! start with tyre pressures found a local traclk or a small circuit which you can ride all the time and that stays the same use this to guage whether the changes you make are helpful or worse lots of info on here about handling but its a broad subject ..good luck let us know how you get on ..

To summarize what twigster said...

 

Start by performing some well needed maintenance!

 

For the suspension:

Change fork oil, replace bushings and seals, grease linkage bearings, and set the suspension back to factory settings.

Then get the correct springs, front and rear, for your weight.

Then adjust the race sag on the rear shock.

Then start adjusting the clickers to suit your riding style.

 

Check your valve clearances as soon as possible.

Check your carb jetting.

yep dead spider is 100% correct a good service and going over the bike will pay dividends .Have the c.c.c mods been done? All the info you will ever need is on this site .If you have little or no knowledge about the bike or just dont feel confident ask a buddy or a local mechanic to help you at the beginning but it will pay you to learn a little and quickly too ! Performance machinery are like spoilt kids give them what they want and they behave stop looking after them and they cause no end of problems !! Without proper maintenance the bike could go BANG So buy a manual ,get a mechanically minded buddy ,or go to the local garage .. let us know how you get on !

Get a Honda Owners Manual and Competition Handbook, it is 160+ pages of good stuff on maintenance, setup, and tuning.  A Honda Service manual is also a good resource for more intensive maintenance/repairs.  Check out ebay and/or Amazom.  

 

Measuring static and rider sag will help you set proper fork/shock spring preload and indicate appropriate springs. There are two different sets of sag values; MX and Enduro.  Using MX percentages will indicate stiffer spring rates than the Enduro. I use Dwight Rudder's Enduro percentages. 

 

Testing different clicker setting will help you, or a tuner, decide  fork/shock valving changes.

 

The CCC mods and a JD Jetting kit will dramatically improve throttle response and power.

 

Intake valve maintenance is very important, also piston ring and/or piston replacement.
