Cylinder plating question.

Recommended Posts

Hi. I'm currently rebuilding a 1999 rm125 that had the crankshaft seize up. I sent that to kenoconnor but now that I've got it all ready to put back together I hit a snag. I ordered a wiseco standard size piston just to refresh the top end. However when I went to install the top end there was a note that said not to use the wiseco ring with a chrome plated cylinder. My question is,

What type of plating is on an oem 99 rm125 cylinder?

Thanks guys.

Nikasil IS chrome plated

You have a ring for an iron bore.

I have no idea what barrel you have. Is it stock and never touched? Did you buy the bike used?

Many go the cheap route and get a iron liner installed (bad idea). So unless you check, there is noway to know. A plated barrel is more silvery and a iron barrel has a more gold tint. You can rub a little steel wool on the bottom of the inside of the barrel. If you can see marks from the rubbing, it is probably iron, if it just cleaned it off and you still see cross hatch, it is probably plated.
