Honda CRF250X Oil transfer from engine to gearbox

Recommended Posts

I have a 2008 CRF250X. I have drained the engine oil and there was next to nothing in there. I drained the gearbox oil and there was 500ml more than the recommended amount. Is it possible for engine oil to transfer from the engine side to the gearbox side at all? Thanks for your help.

Yes.  Typically it means the right side crankshaft seal is bad, but it can also come through on the balancer shaft.   It's usually the crank seal though because of the way the lip is pointing.

Before you go in there though, make sure the crank vent is open and not plugged.   If it's plugged, the crankcase will pressurize and force oil past the seal.  Also being a 2008, when's the last time the piston and rings were done?   You may be getting a lot of blow-by on the rings.   A leak-down test would be a good idea if your un-sure, or simply replace them.

Jim.
