Control Cable Cleaning Idea

Recommended Posts

I cleaned and lubed my throttle cables the other day without any special tools. I simply sprayed contact cleaner and dry lube down the cable with the can's straw, which was messy, wasteful, and time consuming. I had an idea the day after and am wondering if anyone else has tried it. I'll be giving it a shot next time around. My idea is to first place an o-ring on the tip of the threaded portion of the cable end then slide an appropriately sized piece of heat shrink tubing over the entire threaded portion then heat it so it conforms and seals to the threads and o-ring essentially creating a funnel. Then simply spray cleaner/lube inside the makeshift funnel. Seems like it would work, and it would be a very cheap. A kit of heat shrink tubing and o-rings can be had for dollars and would last years.

Yeah, I'm aware of the Motion Pro tool, but heard bad reviews. Heat shrink should seal against the threads pretty well I would think. Hell, I'll do my clutch cable tomorrow and try it out.
