XL 250 hard start.. don't know where else to post !

Recommended Posts

Alright I'm new to the moto world and loving it. I own a 84 xl250 , nearly fully restored by previous owner. It was running strong starting great until....

Want for a great ride only did about 50 miles. Put her in the garage for the next . temps hit about 40. Come morning go to kick start and decompression cable snaps. It still kicks over . actually feels a bit lighter but haven't been able to start since .

Once it ran for about a minute before dying.

I've read that many times after that cable breaks its nearly impossible to even kick let alone start .

Any suggestions?
Thanks

Well, there's no auto decomp cam for starting on the camshaft like the newer XRs. Your model is tied in with the kickstarter and cable actuated. So I suggest you install a new cable.

"Feels a little lighter", only started once and then only briefly.  What about bump start?  Maybe the decomp mechanism jammed partly opened and that's what made the cable break?  There should be some play at the decomp lever on the head.
