Can't remove clutch baskets -XR400

Recommended Posts

Having to pull my crank cases apart to remove lots of piston debris and I can't get the clutch baskets off for nothing!

I've removed the clutch basket nut and looking at videos and my manual the baskets should just pull right out, but they don't.

I can literally pick the engine up by the baskets.

There's a few millimetres wiggle when trying to pull it out but it feels as though something else is bolting it down. Looking through the Conrod opening it looks like there's some gears attached to it?

Anyone any ideas?

Thanks!

It should lift out. There's nothing else bolted in. There's a gear on the back on the clutch outer basket. It may have a tight mesh with the idler and primary gears.

Instead of cocking the baskets side to side when pulling, try rotating them on the shaft while pulling straight up. Tolerances are pretty tight, so any cocking could make them hang up, especially the outer basket since it slides onto a guide sleeve.

I've tried it straight and it still won't come out.

I've got a gear puller, thinking of giving this a try?

Yep, managed to get it off with a gear puller, with hardly any effort. Thanks
