Carb problems w/Yamaha Dt-100

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

Newb here on TT, joined 2 wks ago trying to find answers to my problems, but got lost in all the Awesome content n posts. U guys have a great blog here & r fantastic. :applause:  Will be a regular from here on out.

I'm man enough to admit I'm at a loss & need some advice or input from U all, because I'm having no luck on my own. :banghead:  It's fustrating.

I just got a pretty good deal ($250) on a 91 yamaha Dt-100, it runs & starts up everytime, but is a gut less wonder. My first thought was maybe it's just worn out n needed a top end, but after doing a compression yest I was totally amazmed that it had 120# psi.

So I started  w/cleaning the fuel system drained n cleaned out the tank, cleaned the carb, new plug (old 1 was burning rich) also ck'd reed valve but it looked good (sealed), BUT it still runs like a gut less wonder, (my neighbor drives a lil Rascal wheelchair can lap me around the block) :jawdrop:  Then it dawned on me exhaust system, so I removed the spark arrester (silencer) it was pretty gummed up, that gave it a little pep (at least now I can get the front wheel to come up in 2nd). Also appeared to be running rich, reading the plug (carbon n black) so I adjusted the needle valve (it was in the center clip of the 5 settings) seems to have elimitated some of the smoke, tried adjusted the fuel-air mixture screw,  but it's still gut less.

I even purchased a new carb which made no big difference.

Back in the late 70s I had a little yamaha Gt-80 mini enduro that'd run circles around n kick butt compared to this 1.

So my question is ? What am I forgetting, missing or neglected to ck, have I overlooked something ?

Please any & all advice would be greatly appreciated from U all.

Krannie,

Thank You so much Sir

 U were absolutely right.

I pulled the reed cage out n pored gas into them n they leaked rather poured rt. thru them like it was a garden hose.  lol

I cleaned them up & reinstalled them & did it again n it was more like a dripping faucet.

These reeds are made of metal not unlike the boysen that are made of a see thru plastic.

So I'm going to be ordering some off eBay.

Thanks again

Ty-250-Dav
