New to me 96 xr 600..

Recommended Posts

Had been sitting for a while. Got it , rebuilt crab , new stator , valve check a few other things. Fired right up , valves seemed loud . Re-checked valves loosened intake valves.. Still seem kind of loud but it's been a few years since I've rode a xr. I don't remember my 99 400 being that loud ...I loosened all valves to spec in 1st check.

Valves are checked on the COMPRESSION stroke, not the exhaust stroke. If done incorrectly the right exhaust valve adjustment will be way loose. Compare both of the exhaust adjuster screws. Both should show the same amount of threads. If the right one has more showing you did the adjustment wrong.

On the other hand the PO could have run the engine low on oil and the left exhaust cam lobe and rocker are are toast.

Crack the upper banjo bolt open when idling to see if there is oil getting pumped.
