Ktm 85 Smoking Really Bad!

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

Replaced the gear box oil and coolant in my Ktm 85 2004 bike today and started it up, loads of smoke coming from exhaust and bogged when I opened throttle,

What could of caused this?

Many Thanks Charlie

It's possible it's a head gasket drinking coolant, or a crankshaft seal drinking transmission fluid.

Was it smoking before you changed the two fluids?

Was it maybe smoking a little bit before you changed the two fluids?

When you changed the two fluids, were either of them low?

Also, post this in the relevant KTM forum.

Engine coolant has a very distinct sweet smell.

Coolant and oil will burn white.

Dark is usually an indication of too much fuel (rich).

Has the bike been sitting?

I have to ask, but make sure the choke isn't on, or you left a rag in the air box.

Coolant burns white but oil burns black I believe?

I reckon if it was burning enough it could have a dark color to it.

If it smokes heavily, consistantly, all he would have to do is let it run for a bit, and one of the 2 fluids will dissapear lol.
