3x3 with stock exhaust

Recommended Posts

On my 03-E, I re-jetted and 3X3'd while leaving stock muffler alone, it ran stronger, but the sparkplug got too blackened. After un-corking the muffler, it ran even stronger and the plug stayed clean. Sure the bikes a little louder, but I live in a Harley friendly community, and those guys bikes are ridiculously loud

On a 400s is it worth doing the 3x3 mod with the jet kit if I keep my stock exhaust?  Will I still get something out of it without changing the pipe?

Nope...'even-out' the flow !   Got 2 of em without 3x3, + DJ, works superbly !...Yep DJ w/o 3+3 way to go !   :ride:

Did this on my 2001 back in 2007;

Stock exhaust, 3x3, Jetting, 47t sprockets - totally transformed the bike, it's why I

have owned it for 12? years.

Double check your float level and your petcock while your there; As others have said,

your plug may foul occasionally if you let it idle for too long,

Is there a place where I can see what jets I have to use, clip position and turns of the mixture screw.  I am close to sea level.  Mass...  Stock exhaust, 3x3, Jetting

And Dynojet or JD jetting?  Which one?

Is this a good matrix to follw?

3X3 and DJ with stock exhaust (MJ, PJ, Clip from top, fuel screw normally starting at 2.5)

140,25,4th, 2.5 sea level-2000
136,25,3rd 1800-3500
134-136,25,3rd over 3000
128,25,3rd 5000
126,25,3rd over6000
124,25,3rd up to 12000

Ok gotcha, if you're doing the 3x3, use the JD kit.  155mj - 25pj, 2 3/4 turns out - Blue needle 4th - (Sea level-4000 ft).  This will get you very close.

I know the JD kit comes with everything you need, including float blow screws, follow the kits instructions, they're very good.

I went with the 4th clip for pnw conditions.

Only option i did was add the extended fuel screw following TT instructions with the primary jet.

mine runs flawless, stock exhaust.

Also, the JD instructions say to use groove #3 (unless they updated it).  Just never mind that & use groove #4.....'groovy'  ?

You may also find the 155mj a bit too lean, but start with that.  Afterwards, if your bike does not run satisfactory, stuttering / surging, you should only need to manipulate the MJ.

Just based on my own experiences, every time I get stuttering / surging, richer is the solution.  Hope this might save you some grief.....Aaaand Go !!   ?
