xr650l decompressor

does anyone know what kind of decompression. an xr650l uses and how it works and how

might it leak compression?

It works on centrifugal force. It is also an anti kickback device to prevent damage to the starter gears. It's very unlikely it would cause a loss of compression in any mode other than starting. If you have a low compression issue the rings and piston are worn or damaged.

If the valves are set tight, it can leak compression.

 

The decomp can fail and not completely disengage, but it's pretty rare.

Adjusting (increase the clearance) the exhaust valve actuated by the decomp can test for this.

 

Random losses of compression and sometimes varying tappet clearance are sometimes a sign of loose valve seats.
