Greasing Seal Lips

Recommended Posts

I feel kind of dumb asking this question, but I've always wondered if I'm greasing my shock linkage and swing arm seals correctly. The manual says to grease the seal lips. Does this mean to grease only the inner portion of the seal? I've been greasing the entire seal, as well as packing grease into the large groove/channel on the back side. Is this the proper way? Something tells me I shouldn't be packing grease into that groove but part of me says yes because it will attract and trap dirt and keep it away from the bearings. I'm not looking for an "I do it this way" response, but rather a "this is the proper way because" response. Thanks.

I did some searching and got my answer. The lips are the inner portion of the seal that contacts the collars. Makes sense. That was probably the portion I was greasing the least. Duh.
