California 2016 MLK Weekend Camp-Ride with Family and Friends - El paso mountans

Recommended Posts

Has a fun Camp-riding trip out to the El Paso Mountains with Friends and family this MLK Holiday weekend.

I got to show off some of the sites the El Paso mountains has to offer. Took the group to see The Burro Schmidt tunnel, the Walsh cabin, Bickel camp, Talc mines, The old Post office cabin, and Robbers roost roadside ghost town.

Played around camp, and ate, and ate..., and ate.

My son in law did real good for his first ride. Too bad I didn't get any Gopro footage of his riding tricks, like launching the bike into a bush like a pro.

My grandson impressed me with riding the 250x like he has done it for years. He was loving the whoops, the sand, and mud puddles.

My Grandson and I arrived at 3pm on Friday and secured our camp spot. Three other families and my son in law arrived after dark.  Another friend and his son came up Saturday morning. Good thing I arrived when I did, as a few other campers were driving by looking for a camp spot. we had the area to our selves.

Saturday, we rode out to the Burro Schmidt Tunnel, Walsh cabin, and Bickel camp. a mix of terrain and rom rhinos to bikes, quads and a truck. went back to camp and played around there.

Sunday showed off the talc mines, the bonanza trail postoffice, the Robbers roost streetside ghost town, and played around camp some more.

loaded up and headed back home on Monday

The weather was awesome.

My grandson wearing his gopro, while trail riding the 250.  cant tell from the video, but the whoops on ep14 are good sized and last for a while.  He did good.  Also you could see him carefully pass other riders.  It also shows my buddies son after he hits the dirt and flies 20 feet from the bike.   He was ok.  the crash only broke the clutch lever on the 150 he was riding as well.  His first bike ride (quad rider)

Here is a clip of my grandson walking through the walsh cabin

Here are some clips of me following my son-in-law riding for the first time.  Didn't get much video as I had gopro battery issues.  meaning, being an idiot, forgot to charge my extra batteries. lol

Also love the reaction my grandson had after hitting a log series of whoops on the 250x

Nice pics and video. I love riding that area and especially after this perfect weather we are having with the rains it is amazing. I was thinking about doing the ride to McIver's cabin this weekend. If you can handle another rider in your group let me know i'm looking for local guys to ride with. I ride a CRF250R so you'd have to put up with my kick-starting issues on occasion 🙂

We made a trip to McGivers 3 weeks ago, the top and north side are snow covered. The drop from the microwave was fun for me and my oldest, everyone else was a little overwhelmed with very little traction.

What's the drop from the microwave? Is that the section from the weather station or whatever that fenced off radio tower is near there?

Yeah, the fork in the road at the top...left to the fenced off building and right to the cabin. About 100 yards past that is the steepest part of the road and it's on the north face of the mountain. There's about a 100 yard section in there that is really shaded and holds the snow pretty good. There was snow all the way to the top when we went ( from the last area of blacktop where you take a right into the trees)

Ah ok. Yes I know exactly the spot your're talking about. I thought the approach to the mountain was on the south side. That stretch just past the fenced off building is where all the fun starts on that SC65 trail.   :ride:
