Cold Idle

Recommended Posts

Just bought a 2001 XR400 a month ago that had been sitting in some guys basement for two years.  I changed the gas and completely rebuilt the carb; new jets, new needle, new gaskets and now it starts 2nd kick, and when warm idles like a kitten.  My question is: shouldn't there be a high idle when first started with full choke?  I have to keep revving it to keep it running until warm, then I can take the choke off.  Did I miss something in the rebuild?

Thanks!

Yes, usually when on full choke it will idle high when first starting from cold. The choke has 2 other positions besides OFF. Be sure you're putting the lever all the way up for full choke( 2 clicks up from OFF).

Be sure you're not running too low of an idle speed. Increasing idle by 1- 2 turns is too much if it's starting at all. Go 1/2 turn and adjust from there.

I think I may have had the overall idle speed too low.  After 30 years of only streetbikes, I'm used to a tachometer telling me what RPM I'm spinning.  Thanks for the tips!
