hey everyone i just recently purchased a 1997 honda xr400r here in vancouver. i had a few questions if anyone could help answer.

1: what a good gear ratio for riding about 50% on road and 50% on dirt. (wanting to travel from vancouver thru BC and down into montana and final destination is halifax N.S.

2: would a pumper carb on the xr400r be antiquate for riding from sea level and up into alpine.

Folks that ride their XR on the street say that 15/40 is pretty good. But what do you mean by "dirt"? Roads or single track? 15/40 on dirt roads would probably be fine but I'd hate it for single track.

Don't know which pumper carb you have in mind, but the Mikuni TM36 would be "adequate". It would perform better than stock anyway. Jet it for near sea level and tweak the fuel screw as you go up in elevation. It may not run it's best (being a little rich) at the higher elevations (depending on what it is) but it will run.
