Chain length with larger rear sprocket

Recommended Posts

I went up 2 teeth on my rear sprocket and bought a new chain. New chain is a 112 and with my wheel all the way forward the chain is too short to go together by probably 1 link. Should I have gotten a chain 2 links longer because I increased rear sprocket by 2 teeth? Is it that simple? Thanks!

Definitely buy a chain longer than needed if you aren't sure or are running different gearing (never tried before).

Usually these bikes need 114-116 links but that isn't set in stone.

See if you can exchange the chain from a longer one.

Thanks! I bought a 116 and ended up shortening it to 114 (thanks harbor freight) and I now have a fitting chain.
