I'm new to the forum so I like to say hello to everyone...

 

Could anyone tell me where I could get a light weight flywheel for my drz400e 2007 model. I know trail tech used to make one until 2 year ago then stopped them. Ive tried every where to find one even email trail tech looked over ebay but nothing.... Can anyone help???

The market went away because Trail Tech was the only maker and they had some serious quality control problems. So they stopped selling and that is that. You best bet would be to scour the clssifieds and Ebay for someone sellng a used one. If it was used, at least you'll know it was not a defective one.

FYI S/SM are the same part.

Thanks for the reply William I guess its something that I'll be able to find as I've looked though Ebay emailed parts stores in the UK and US. I've heard you can machine the oem flywheel but with not knowing how much metal you can take off its kinda not worth doing.

The flywheel was designed for the Suzuki LTZ400 quad, so when you search, make sure that is what you are looking for, the Trail tech part number is 6850-44. Also, you'll need to get a flywheel puller, I got one from Motion Pro. https://www.motionpro.com/product/08-0306

 

I spent a long time looking for one at the end of last summer, eventually got it from Motostrano, and I think it was their last one.

 

That said, I possibly found a few:

I know they had QC issues with the earlier versions, but I'm sure they fixed the issues and the later ones were fine.

 

I think they stopped making it simply because it was built for the LTZ (it's 16oz lighter than the LTZ flywheel, but only 8oz lighter than the DRZ), and that people just weren't buying them.

 

I have one, a later model, haven't installed it yet. Beyond the supposed performance increase, it also has stronger magnets, so should theoretically generate more power from the stator. Gonna put in a supposed higher power stator at the same time.

Machining a flywheel is easy, avoiding stress risers and maintaining fillets and radii takes some thought and experience.

 

This Adam Booth's channel, does a wide variety of machining.  Notice where he leaves metal.  There's another YT vid that explains the stress riser issues, will post when I find it.

According to another YT machinist (the one I can't find), if the material is symetrically removed then the factory balance is fine.  So if your run out is 0.0001"or less you're good. The crank shaft end taper is fun to make.

Re-chucking it will cost you .0003 easily. Remember, it was symmetrical the first time it was machined and it needed balancing,

Got one off the net from Holland trouble is it came in a plain box with no instructions I've been told its new. I'm not sure if I will install it yet as I've read so many bad stories about them burning stators out....
