YZ85 transmission noise

Recommended Posts

I Noticed My sons 2012 YZ85 has a strange noise in transmission when the bike is running in neutral with the clutch released, pull the clutch in and it goes away. Any ideas what could be the cause or is this normal?

It's gear rattle, caused by the fact that at an idle with the clutch engaged (the lever is released, so the clutch is engaged), the engine does not idle at a steady speed, but instead speeds up with each power stroke and then slows for each compression stroke, whipping the gears in the trans back and forth in the process.  When you disengage, or release the clutch by pulling the lever, you disconnect the trans from the engine and it gets quieter.

It's normal (you should hear a YZ450 do this) and as long as the gearbox isn't noisy underway, you're good.
