XT - Force Combo and FMF Gnarly?

Recommended Posts

I've put in an order for a '17 X-Trainer. Which means I have some time to figure out accessories before it gets here (estimated build date of Sep 26... :banghead: ). I am going back and forth on the options for Pipe/Guard/Skidplate combination.

Given the weak walls of the stock pipe, I'm planning to get the FMF Gnarly. I've heard that it keeps the low grunt and adds some to mid-top. I also like the look of the Force Skid/Pipe guard Combo, but that produces a big question that I can't find an answer to. Will that combo work with the Gnarly. I contacted Force and Beta.au to ask. They don't know, but offered to send one to me for just the price of shipping to try it out. While that's a pretty reasonable offer, I don't have a bike to try it on. Has anyone had real-world experience with this?

My other options are:

  1. Force plate with stock pipe
  2. Gnarly pipe with Enduro Engineering plate (and try to fab up my own cage with negligible experience or skill)
  3. Gnarly pipe, and for the bike to get here, and test (I don't see myself having the patience for this one)
  4. (something I may not have considered yet..?)

What say you?

I will let you know.. was told by the shop the gnarly for the 300rr fits... As for the force did they make one that works for the xtrainer or do you have to customize the 300 rr one? I know for my ktm your order it pipe specific... So you better like the pipe or others might not fit...

Right, Gnarly is known to fit the XT.

Force does make an X-Trainer combo, it just has not been tested with the Gnarly pipe.

Keep us posted.  I ordered a gnarly with my Xtrainer.  Curious about jetting.

Hey fellas, first time posting here but I've been following for some time.  I have an X-Trainer with Fox shocks and Boano forks, and loads of protective gear including the Force combo bash guard/pipe guard.  I just ordered the Gnarly pipe and will attempt to fit it up when it arrives.  Will post pics once I have it fitted up, but I suspect it will take some cutting of the guard to make it fit, because it fits pretty tight on the stock pipe.  Wish me luck!

Thanks for chiming in, and good luck. I'm hoping it's not too much modification.

Any luck with the pipe/guard?

The pipes are quite a bit different.  I have a 300RR with the Force and it fits around 10mm in spots.  Perhaps a better option would be to start with a Force for a 300RR and mod the mounts if needed.  I have not seen the XT frame close up on the bottom, but if its the same cradle or close it may just work.  Maybe the XT Force is just the same but designed around the XT pipe.  What a great product, eliminates all pipe issues.  I wouldn't do without one again.

I run the Force guard along with the P3 carbon pipe guard wiht the stock pipe and havent had any problems on my XT. I DID bend up my radiator a bit before I put on the force radiator guards. They are probably the best radiator guards I have ever seen, and I have dropped the bike plenty since putting all this kit on.

I ordered the Gnarly pipe for my '17 Xtrainer, dealer said the Xtrainer will be here before the end of the month, we'll see how that goes.  I'll let you know how he jetted it, we are around 1000-1300 ft. elevation.

So I got the Gnarly pipe installed, and the X-Trainer Force guard doesn't come close to fitting.  It is meant to fit tight around the stock pipe and the Gnarly is quite a bit larger and a different shape.  I checked the part numbers on the stock skid plate and they are the same for the RRs and the X-Trainer so I'm thinking the RR guard will probably fit, maybe with some minor mods.  I think I'm going to take the chance and order one, but right now Beta Australia shows it's on back order.

The folks at Force shipped me the Force RR guard today. I can't say enough good things about Force - they sent me CAD drawings of the X-trainer guard overlaid upon the RR guard to let me determine whether it would work which I thought was really nice.  I will provide an update as soon as it arrives.

Update - I finally got the RR guard fitted up today with the FMF Gnarly pipe.  If you bolt the guard straight up with no mods, it will work but doesn't fit up tight to the frame.  To fix this issue I made just a few simple modifications.

1)  The backside of the guard is kicked up a bit compared to the Xtrainer guard, which is basically flat.  I straightened it out with a vice.

2)  The slot for the front exhaust mount hole interferes with the Xtrainer mount, so I opened that up both to the right side and the front with a Dremel.

3)  There is a spacer installed on the rear mount of the guard, but it is too big.  I removed it and used one that is a few mm shorter.

After these quick mods, which took a little less than an hour, it fits as well as the Xtrainer guard, tight to the frame, and tight to the pipe without touching.  I can post pics if anyone is interested.

Happy to be of service; I like tinkering and making things work.  I loaned a friend the Xtrainer Force guard to try with the Fresco pipe.  Once we know whether that works I figured we'll have all bases covered for the Xtrainer.

How did the Gnarly pipe perform compared to the stock pipe?
